The Ballad of Bobby and Kate

from Three Hands Clapping by D. Michael Harris

/

lyrics

They say that Bobby met her back in High School
When Katie was a girl of seventeen
And he gave his heart away
In Spanish class that day
To the loveliest girl that he had ever seen

Now Katie had been through a lot already
She was young but she was older than her years
But he took her hand in his
And she gave him her first kiss
Not knowing one day they’d look back and say

That Bobby taught his kids how to swing a hammer
And Katie taught them how to lead the charge
And together they taught them how to hold on
True when the holding’s hard
And how to aim your life to please the Lord

Then Bobby ran away to join the navy
Whether running from or running to they’d never say
He came to himself one night
And he knew it wasn’t right
So he ran back home to Katie’s arms to stay

I like to think she met him on the platform
With no ring but he got down on bended knee
He asked her if she’d do
And she asked if he would too
And hand in hand they became a family, where

Bobby taught his kids how to swing a hammer
And Katie taught them how to lead the charge
And together they taught them how to hold on
True when the holding’s hard
And how to aim your life to please the Lord

They settled down to build a life together
In a little yellow house beside the cove
They had pains and they had joys
They had three rambunctious boys
And they held it all together with their love

Then Bobby wandered west to make his fortune
And Katie came along within the year
Out in the Prairie sun
Three boys turned into men
Nurtured by their laughter and their tears

Cause Bobby taught his kids how to swing a hammer
And Katie taught them how to lead the charge
And together they taught them how to hold on
True when the holding’s hard
And how to aim your life to please the Lord

And I can only hope that I might build a home
As well as Bobby built
And I can only hope to find within me Katie’s strength
And I can only hope that I might live as well
As they taught me to

Cause years run by and dreams turn in to memories
Like footprints covered over by the snow
But whatever the’ve yet to find
And whatever gets left behind
The greatest legacy is just to know...

That Bobby taught his kids how to swing a hammer
And Katie taught them how to lead the charge
And together they taught them how to hold on
True when the holding’s hard
And how to aim your life to please the Lord
Yeah, how to aim your life to please the Lord
You know they aimed their life to please the Lord
